Meet PYW

Who runs the program, and what we are trying to do.

Coaching staff

Mike Liess

Program Director

Coach Liess is in his 5th year with PYW. He currently has one son still wrestling in PYW and another son at the varsity level. Coach Liess is an alumnus of Penfield High School and the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), where he competed in both collegiate wrestling and lacrosse.

Victor Tompkins

Program Director

Coach Vic has been involved with PYW for going on 4 years. He currently has three kids in the program. He wrestled at Irondequoit High School and is a graduate of Ohio Technical College (OTC).

Our philosophy

  • To introduce school age children to the sport of wrestling while maintaining a positive learning environment for each child. Our focus is on learning and development, as well as growing the wrestling community within the town of Penfield.
  • The safety and well-being of each wrestler is the #1 priority.

What we expect of wrestlers

The expectation of each wrestler participating in PYW is that they give their best effort. Giving their best effort means listening to instructors and trying their best, as well as being respectful of others. The focus is not on winning championships, but on developing future champions at the next level — JV, varsity, college and beyond.

Making weight

Your child will not be expected to lose or “cut” weight. Children are still growing and developing physically, and it is not the philosophy of PYW to encourage weight loss. Tournaments and the GRYWL league have weight classes to promote safe wrestling.
